Getting to Know

Braces for Children
Malocclusion is a word very few know about, but many children experience. Malocclusion (mal meaning bad and occlusion meaning how the teeth come together) can be caused by thumb sucking and lip biting, but is mainly hereditary in most cases. Malocclusion can take many forms (i.e. overbite, underbite, overcrowding, etc.) that only orthodontic measures can correct. One of the problems with orthodontic treatment for children is time, we have structured our office to offer the convenience needed for proper treatment.

Braces are not just for kids! More and more adults are opting for orthodontic treatment. Presently, adults make up 20% to 30% of our patients and this percentage is increasing. Important benefits for adults seeking orthodontic treatment are an improved appearance, increased self-esteem and a much healthier smile.

How long will my orthodontic treatment last ?
Treatment time depends on your individual case. Your cooperation in keeping appointments, proper hygiene and care of braces may allow us to finish your orthodontic treatment early.

Your initial visit will give you an opportunity to meet the doctor and our knowledgeable staff who will answer any questions you may have regarding orthodontic care. If braces are needed, a convenient appointment will be made for your fitting.

What kind of braces are available?
In addition to the popular metal braces with which most people are familiar, we also offer the 'Almost Invisible' ceramic braces for those who want their braces worn, but not seen.

How to Care
for Your New Braces

Oral Hygiene
Its is very important to keep your teeth, gums and appliances absolutely clean throughout your treatment. At least once a day, spend a few moments with a mirror checking the appliances to make sure they are thoroughly clean and in good shape.

Eating
Be careful to protect your appliances when you eat. The first few days, soft foods will be the best to eat. Throughout your treatment, avoid foods such as tough meats, hard breads, raw vegetables and any other foods that we instruct can cause problems.

How to Handle
Minor Emergencies

Loosening of Teeth
It is normal for your teeth to loosen during treatment. They must, so that the teeth can begin to move to their new position.

Loose Wire or Band
Sometimes a wire, band or bracket may come loose. If the wire protrudes and becomes irritating, it can be turned down with a blunt instrument like a pencil eraser or a spoon until repaired.

Soreness
A few days after the braces are placed, there might be a general soreness in your mouth. This discomfort can be relieved by rinsing the mouth with a warm salt water mouthwash or taking a pain reliever. This soreness is expected.
